Notes are unpredictable and out of control like real life.  You will never have all the answers about notes, just as you will never know everything about real life.  Wherever you have all the answers, where you are a know-it-all, an expert, that is where you can manipulate, where you can push the buttons and pull the levers for predictable results.  But only what is mechanical and dead can be under your control.  Wherever you have a subtle, hidden motive of prediction and control, you need to believe you know what you are doing, and wherever you are in charge, wherever you can exercise your convenience, you know what to do about a problem or challenging situation, which means there is no genuine entry into mystery, into the unknown. Having found a way to eliminate mystery, you lost all sense of awe, of wonder, of magical exploration.  Hence, you can maintain dead normalcy in your encounters with notes through not really encountering them where it counts at all.
